This is a playlist I made to pay tribute to the divas of modern pop culture. It was inspired by a conversation I had with my cousin that prompted me to consider why I love just the pure concept of a diva. What I realized was that…
- In the past “diva” has been used as a pejorative, implying that a woman was crazy, over-demanding, or ambitious, even when she was probably just being a normal human being with an ability to express her desires. Because of these unfair connotations, it’s important to reclaim the word in a positive light since, even when a woman has a big ego, to quote Marina and the Diamonds, “I really don’t know why that’s such a big deal though.”
- Embracing modern day divas helps with the often-discussed need for women to build up other women. Take Beyoncé for example, who just so happens to be the cover of the playlist. The greatest part about the public’s consumption of her as an artist is the way people use the confidence of her onstage persona as inspiration for their own lives. This is not to say that you have to love Beyoncé or or else (dun.dun.dun), but merely that the nature of the public’s adoration for her sets a precedent that there’s enough female confidence to go around.
As you can imagine, this playlist features a great deal of Beyoncé (how could I resist?) along with some other familiar voices. All the songs deal with ambitious women (aka divas/primadonna) and are all sung by women. Enjoy!
